From rail stop to cheese town

According to the Handbook of Texas, Abernathy was founded in 1909 when the Santa Fe built its line from Plainview to Lubbock. It was named for M. G. Abernathy of the South Plains Investment Company, a partner of Marvin C. Overton, the physician whose Overton Addition shaped early Lubbock. The town incorporated in 1924, ran a cheese factory from 1929 to 1951 that turned out 1,800 pounds a day at its peak, and saw oil found nearby in 1946–47. The Handbook also notes that in 1980, 699 residents lived on the Lubbock County side.

Mold risks in mid-century Abernathy homes

West Texas air is dry most of the year, but mold follows water, not climate averages. In homes built in the 1960s, the common sources are plumbing that has been patched over the years, roof leaks after spring and summer storms, and cooling equipment.

For homes that use evaporative coolers, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that these units "add humidity to the air in your home." Following the manufacturer's maintenance advice matters: standing water and wet pads need regular cleaning. Central air systems bring their own issues: drain pans, condensate lines and ductwork. Our page on swamp cooler and HVAC mold covers both.

The EPA suggests keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%. A cheap hygrometer is an easy way to check.

Two counties, one license check

Because Abernathy straddles Hale and Lubbock counties, search both when you look up companies on TDLR's license search. Ask any company for its TDLR license number and check it there. On jobs that need a license, Texas Occupations Code §1958.155 requires the assessor and the remediator to be separate firms with no shared ownership. A licensed assessor writes the protocol and later does clearance, and the owner receives a Certificate of Mold Damage Remediation (TDI form MDR-1) within 10 days. See mold inspection and testing for how the assessment step works. This is general information, not legal advice.

Abernathy mold questions

Is Abernathy in Hale County or Lubbock County?

Both. The Handbook of Texas describes Abernathy as mostly in Hale County, with part of the town in Lubbock County. It makes no difference for requesting quotes, since we help homeowners on either side. It can matter when you search TDLR's license database by county, so search Hale and Lubbock to see more companies.

Can a swamp cooler cause mold in an Abernathy home?

It can add to the problem. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that evaporative coolers add humidity to indoor air. Wet pads and standing water in the unit need regular cleaning, and indoor humidity is worth watching while it runs. If you see growth near vents or on nearby walls, fix the moisture source before or during cleanup.

Do I need mold testing before remediation in Abernathy?

Not usually. TDLR says it is generally not necessary to identify the species of mold, and the CDC does not recommend routine sampling. The EPA says sampling is usually unnecessary when mold is visible. For larger jobs, a licensed assessor decides what sampling, if any, belongs in the protocol, and prices that work.
