A railroad town with 1960s-era housing

Idalou grew up around a depot on the South Plains and Santa Fe Railway, the Lubbock-to-Crosbyton line built in 1911. It got a post office in 1917 and incorporated in 1925. The Handbook of Texas gives two stories for the name: Lou and Ida Bacon, or Ida and Lou Bassett. Today it's a cotton and sorghum marketing town 12 miles northeast of Lubbock on U.S. 62/82.

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024) estimates Idalou's population at about 2,151, with a wide margin of error (±422). For mold, the housing matters more: the median Idalou home was built in 1969, well before Lubbock County's 1985 median. About 71% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and the rest are rented.

Where mold tends to start in older Idalou homes

Lubbock averages about 18 inches of rain a year (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), so dry air alone doesn't explain mold. EPA's mold guide puts it plainly: "The key to mold control is moisture control."

  • Long-serving plumbing. Decades-old supply lines, drains and water heaters can drip unseen inside walls or under cabinets. Read more on mold from water leaks and slab leaks.
  • Hail-worn roofs. On June 24, 2019, the National Weather Service logged baseball- to softball-size hail in Slaton, Wilson and east of New Deal. A damaged roof can leak into the attic before a ceiling stain shows. See roof leak and hail damage mold.
  • Warm-season downpours. About 63% of Lubbock's yearly rain falls from May through September, often in thunderstorms. In May 2019, a flash flood warning for eastern Lubbock County cited water in homes.

EPA advises drying water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth. If that window has passed, a licensed assessor can locate the moisture source and map the affected area. See our mold inspection and testing page.

Renting in Idalou?

Roughly three in ten Idalou homes are rented. TDLR's consumer sheet says "Current Texas law does not require landlords or property owners to inspect for or clean mold." Texas Property Code §92.052 covers repairs of conditions that materially affect an ordinary tenant's health or safety, after proper notice. It doesn't name mold, but mold from a leak may qualify. Ask any company for its TDLR license number and check it on TDLR's license search. See the full process.

Idalou mold questions

Is mold more likely in an older Idalou home?

Age alone doesn't cause mold. Water does. But the median Idalou home was built in 1969 (Census ACS 2020–2024), so many houses have older plumbing, water heaters and roofs, which are common leak sources. EPA's mold guide says to fix the water problem and dry wet materials within 24–48 hours. If you suspect a hidden leak, a licensed assessor can trace the moisture.

Do I need a licensed company for mold in my Idalou house?

If you hire a company and the mold covers 25 contiguous square feet or more, Texas Occupations Code §1958.102 says that company needs a TDLR license. Homeowners working on their own home are exempt at any size. EPA's separate advice is that patches under about 10 square feet can usually be handled yourself. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does mold remediation cost in Idalou?

We don't have Idalou-specific prices. National cost guides (2024–2026) put a typical remediation job at about $1,200–$3,750 and a mold inspection at about $450–$800. These are estimates, not quotes. Larger jobs in Texas involve a licensed assessor and a separate licensed remediator, so budget for both. Real prices come from licensed pros after an on-site assessment.
